The Surrounding Area

Fort Baker is surrounded by a host of other great destinations, natural and human-made, old and new. At the centerpiece of one of the world’s greatest and most diverse urban national parks, trails, beaches, historic sites, and world-renowned scenery are all immediately accessible. And the treasures of the entire 75,500-acre Golden Gate National Parks are all within reach.

This urban national park is adjacent to one of the world’s greatest cities and its surrounding communities. San Francisco is literally just a stroll across the Golden Gate Bridge. Major cultural institutions, universities, and research centers are located in San Francisco and nearby cities.

Considered the birthplace of mountain biking, Marin County is a world-class destination for adventure and exploration. Marin is also home to a collection of quaint towns such as Sausalito, Mill Valley, and Tiburon. Sausalito is justly famous for its spectacular waterfront views, houseboat communities, and local artists. Mill Valley is the gateway to Mount Tamalpais and the ancient Muir Woods. Tiburon is the jumping-off place for the ferry to Angel Island and Alcatraz.

Less than an hour north of Fort Baker lie the vineyards of Sonoma and Napa Valley, home to some of the world’s best wines and world-class restaurants. About an hour south the heart of technology beats in Silicon Valley.
